Delivering Stress‑Free School Productions: Behind the Scenes of Alice at Sherborne Girls

Last month, we were delighted to return to Sherborne Girls to provide full production support for their Lower School’s Junior Production of Alice, inspired by Laura Wade’s brilliantly inventive adaptation. As always, the brief was clear: create a professional, fully‑supported performance e

nvironment the school could trust—and run—without stress.

And that’s exactly what we delivered.

Full Technical Production, Zero Drama

For this project, GSL supplied and managed the complete technical package:

Staging – Flexible structures designed to suit fast scene changes and playful blocking.

Drapes – Clean masking and a neutral visual canvas to let the characters shine.

Lighting – A dynamic, pre‑programmed rig capable of shifting tone at the snap of a cue.

Sound – Robust audio support ensuring every line from every young performer landed clearly.

Operation & Show Management – Our team built it, ran it, and handed it back tidy and on time.

Schools come to us because we don’t overcomplicate things. We turn up, get on with the job, and deliver exactly what we say we will. No fuss. No surprises. Just reliable, professional production every single time.

Creating a Wonderland Fit for Young Performers

The Sherborne Girls production whisked audiences headfirst into a delightfully unpredictable Wonderland: chaotic caucus races, riddling tea parties, and the Queen of Hearts’ unhinged courtroom all came alive with pace, wit, and beautifully bold character choices.

Productions like this require flexible technical thinking. Young performers need space, support, and clarity—visually and sonically—to perform at their best. Our job is to build an environment that elevates their work while keeping the school team confident and in control.

That’s where experience matters.

Why Schools Trust GSL: We Improvise, Adapt, Overcome

Every school venue is different. Stages vary, timetables shift, budgets tighten, and creative ambitions grow bolder each year. That’s the nature of educational theatre—and we love it.

At GSL, we’ve built our reputation on three non‑negotiables:

1. Consistency

You get the same level of professionalism, planning, and communication whether we’re delivering a small studio show or a full‑scale musical. Teachers and directors know exactly what to expect.

2. Preparation

We don’t arrive hoping the space will work—we arrive knowing exactly how it will. Pre‑production is where stress disappears, and clarity takes over. When we walk through the door, the plan is already solid.

3. Adaptability

Things change. They always do.Timeframes compress, cast sizes grow, power supplies behave badly, or someone suddenly needs an extra entrance. We improvise, adapt, and overcome. It’s second nature to us.

That’s why schools say we’re easy to work with—and why they bring us back.

Practical Advice for Schools Planning Their Next Production

Whether you partner with us or manage things in‑house, here are a few solution‑driven tips to help your next show run smoothly:

🔧 1. Start With the Story

Let the script dictate your production priorities. If the show relies on rapid transitions or large ensemble moments, invest early in staging and lighting design that supports that pace.

📅 2. Build a Production Timeline Backwards

Start from opening night and work your way back. This helps identify pressure points early and ensures the technical schedule aligns with the school calendar.

🎚️ 3. Keep Your Tech Simple but Intentional

Great productions aren’t about complexity—they’re about clarity. Choose lighting states and sound cues that enhance the story without overwhelming the performers.

🧑‍🏫 4. Empower Your Staff and Students

A well‑designed technical setup allows teachers (and confident students) to operate shows smoothly. We design rigs and cue stacks with that goal in mind.

🧰 5. Partner With a Team You Can Trust

Whether it’s GSL or another provider, choose a production partner who listens, plans, and adapts. The right team removes stress, not adds to it.

A Big Well Done to the Sherborne Girls Team

The students tackled Alice with confidence, flair, and a willingness to embrace Wonderland’s playful illogic. From start to finish, it was a joyful, high‑energy week—and we were proud to support the school in bringing it to life.

If your school or venue is looking for consistent, professional production support—from single shows to full annual programmes—our team is here to help.

Let’s create something brilliant together.
